Josephine & Co. features a wide variety of styles.
WINFIELD — At Josephine & Co., the finest home decor comes with service to match.
Need help decorating? Head designer Sueann Oliphant and her staff will take on any project, whether it’s a single flower arrangement or an entire house.
Variety? There’s over 25,000 square feet of showroom, counting the 11 boutiques upstairs.
Flexibility? The obliging Oliphant, who says she’s on call “24/7,” has been known to open the store by special request on Sundays for private showings.
“I’ve done that and it works,” she said. “Because so many people are working, they can’t make it down maybe Monday through Saturday. On a Sunday, a husband and wife can come down and have a store to themselves — a store and a designer.”
No wonder Josephine and Co., has become a local, regional and even national force (through online sales) in the decor business since Sandy and Gary Foust opened it in 2004. Located in a historic 1885 building now known as The Shops at Millington Place, Josephine & Co., and its sister clothing store Posh next door have even developed into destination shopping points that attract tour buses. With a restaurant called Cuppa Jo’s on site, shoppers won’t run out of energy before they’ve perused every corner of the elegantly restored building.

Oliphant, who’s been an interior designer for 20 years, said she buys with a wide variety of tastes in mind when she goes to market.
“We definitely have old world in our store, but my vision when I came aboard was to make somebody feel like they were traveling the world,” she said. “We can just about hit on any particular style. Transitional, contemporary, shabby chic, French country, nautical — we have all of those in the store.”
Indeed, Oliphant said she often buys with particular clients in mind. “I’m always taking pictures, shooting them pictures,” she said. “(Asking) ‘You’ve mentioned this in the past. Is this what you had in mind?’ We don’t just go to market, fill up our store with furnishings and hope for the best.” Josephine & Co., offers free in-home consultations, a service that sets them apart from many competitors.
“We will take merchandise to your home and work with the homeowner as far as placement and coming up with a floor plan. That way, the consumer has a designer on staff. If it works, wonderful. If not, we will just start over.” From area rugs to plush leather furniture, lighting, custom bedding and window treatments (a particular specialty of Josephine & Co.,) the idea is to dress a home “from the floor all the way up to the ceiling.” But Oliphant said she’s not the kind of designer who “just boxes everything up and replaces everything. You need to keep those sentimental treasures and display them. Personalizing the home for the homeowner, that’s what’s important.”
The personalized approach seems to be working. In addition to the Wichita area, Josephine & Co., has clients in Kansas City, northern Oklahoma and Colorado, and ships around the country.
“I think our customer service really does set us apart,” Oliphant said. “We try to make it as easy as possible for somebody walking through the door.”
