Misty McGinnis claims to wish she’d never set foot inside Wichita Pizza Co. “I’m addicted,” she said with a laugh. “I can’t stop eating it.” McGinnis is one of many fans of the east-side pizza joint known for its signature crust and voluminous, out-of-the- ordinary toppings.
Splurge magazine caught up with several faithful customers on a recent night and quizzed them about what makes Wichita Pizza Co. a regular stop. Here’s what they had to say:
Krystal Iseminger Favorite pizza: Pineapple Express This pizza comes topped with meat, feta cheese, mushrooms and pineapple. “The textures are all interesting and the way the flavors go together is delicious,” Iseminger said. She eats there or four times a month and also appreciates the $1 margaritas on Tuesday and service provided by the Hutton family, who own Wichita Pizza Co. “They’re fun to be around and they always take good care of the customers,” Iseminger said.
Missy Todd Favorite pizza Chicken taco “I like the crust,” Todd said. “The crust is kind of crispy.” Missy said her daughters, Grace and Emma, prefer pepperoni. “They also like it because they can go next door and get Blizzards” at the Dairy Queen that’s also owned by the Huttons.
Misty McGinnis Favorite pizza: Mama’s Enchiladas The pizza that led to McGinnis’ “addiction” is topped with chicken, green chiles, onion and cream cheese. “The toppings taste real,” she said. “They don’t taste manufacture. And they go all the way to the end of the crust. They don’t stop and then you have a big ol’ chunk of crust.”
Tammy Wyant Favorite pizza: Spaghetti and meatball; Tom Tom That first pizza name isn’t a misprint. The pizza is actually topped with spaghetti and meatballs, in addition to tomato sauce an cheese. “I’ve never had it except for there,” Wyant said. The Tom Tom is a more traditional all-meat pizza featuring bacon, pepperoni, sausage and hamburger. After stopping in one day soon after Wichita Pizza Co. opened, Wyant said, “We’ve been hooked ever since. We probably go at least once every couple of weeks.”
Kristina Dziewulski Favorite pizza: Chicken taco Why? “Honestly, because they put Doritos on top. That is my favorite part.” Dziewulski says that once she finds a favorite food, she has a hard time trying others. However, she notes that the pepperoni pizza is also “really good” and a favorite of her husband, Darren, and son, Espen. Best of all, she says, is that Wichita Pizza Co. offers gluten-free crust with any pizza. When she’s with a crowd, she usually eats the regular kind, but if it’s just her family, she orders gluten-free. A group of her friends have been meeting at Wichita Pizza Co. on Tuesdays since the restaurant opened, drawn in part by $1 margaritas and a special on the taco pizza.
Leigh Ann Asmann Favorite pizza: Mediterranean Asmann’s choice is topped with feta cheese, kalamata olives, red onion, artichokes and tomatoes. “It’s not like your traditional pizza, the same old everybody has. It just has a much better flavor. It’s not greasy, it’s just awesome. I rarely get a pizza anywhere else. That’s my place.”
