Do you have a love for incredible art and great books? Friends of the Wichita Art Museum will host their 58th Annual Art and Book Fair at the Wichita Art Museum on Mother’s Day weekend, May 13 and 14.
“The Art and Book Fair is a Wichita tradition on Mother’s Day weekend,” says Stephen Perry, Chair of the Art and Book Fair for the Friends of the Wichita Art Museum. “It is a wonderful opportunity for people to visit the art and book fair, enjoy food trucks, visit the new Art Garden and the view the wonderful art in the museum. We will also have a photo booth and fantastic entertainment throughout the weekend.”
The Art and Book Fair is a free event that gives Friends of the Wichita Art Museum the opportunity to share the Wichita Art Museum with the public while raising funds for the organization.
Director of the Wichita Art Museum, Patricia McDonnell explains, “The fair has been going strong for well over 50 years. For any event to have that staying power, it has to resonate with folks. The fair has a loyal following and always brings newcomers as well. It is such fun to browse amazing art, stroll through the museum galleries, and mingle with the crowd.”
The book fair will offer hundreds of new, used and rare books in a multitude of genres including art and children’s books. Additionally, local authors will be on hand to sell and sign their books.
The art fair features the works of more than 50 artists from 12 states, selected through a jury application process. The wide variety of art sold at the art fair will include painting, ceramics, photography, jewelry, 3D and 2D multimedia, fiber, wood, glass and printmaking.
“The juried fair attracts talent from across the region, and it is such fun to stroll the aisles and visit with incredible artists,” says McDonnell. “The art museum bustles on these days during Mother’s Day weekend, and the museum and outdoor fair is a wonderful, fun outing with friends and family.” Since 1960, the Friends of the Wichita Art Museum has raised funds for the Wichita Art Museum while working to establish a permanent endowment for art acquisitions, exhibitions and educational opportunities at the Wichita Art Museum. The Friends of the Wichita Art Museum currently has 40 volunteers.
“The Wichita Art Museum would fall flat without the Friends,” says McDonnell. “The group helps with several critical annual events. With their independent fundraising over the decades, the Friends have developed an endowment that supports the museum. So, the Friends serve the museum through countless volunteer hours as well as through exceptional and generous support.”
