Adventurous Babes Society empowers women to try something new

Kayaking. Belly dancing. Pickleball. Attending a polo match. These are just a few activities the Adventurous Babes Society members have participated in since the organization's beginning in September 2012. The Adventurous Babes Society (ABS) is an organization created locally that is dedicated to providing opportunities for women who are interested in trying new things and having new experiences.

"In 2010, our friend Kim Bessac, organized a group of 16 women to go on a snowshoeing trip in Colorado," says Kathy Mihelic, co-founder of the Adventurous Babes Society. "The idea for ABS came as a result of the friendships and experiences we gained from this trip. We wanted all women to have the opportunity to enjoy these things, too. Our goal is to empower women to step out of their comfort zone while making new friends and checking items off their bucket list."

"If you have that little voice that says, 'I want to do that someday.' Today, is that day." Elizabeth Hotaling,
co-founder, Adventurous Babes Society

Today, ABS has 600 members nationwide, with 500 in the Wichita area. Members range in age from 21 to 82 years old. Each member has different interests, abilities and comes from various socioeconomic backgrounds.

"We love to use a special acronym to describe our organization, ABS. A aspire to do more. B believe in ourselves and S strength and support," says co-founder Elizabeth Hotaling. "We are a community of supportive, encouraging women who want to have fun. Anything can be an adventure. Our adventures range from the physically challenging, like a high ropes challenge course, to social and cultural, like trying a new restaurant or going to the theater."

Members organize over 75 percent of ABS adventures to fit their own interests and personal goals. Activities have included packing backpacks for the Kansas Food bank, painting or cooking classes, playing dodgeball or taking dance lessons.

"Joining ABS was the best decision I've made as I have met some of the most wonderful women," says Tonya Lorenz. "I've done lots of things that challenged me to come out of my comfort zone and grow as a person."

The frequency of adventures varies each week throughout the year. Additionally, an Adventurous Babes convention takes place annually. This annual event for members is a special destination adventure trip that changes each year.

"The New Year is the perfect time to set new goals or resolutions," Mihelic says. "If you are interested in living each day with a can-do attitude, and you would like to surround yourself with like-minded women while participating in fun activities, ABS is the group for you. ABS members can participate as much or as little as they want. There are no set meetings and there is no pressure. Just join in on the activities that interest you. We don't want to look back on life and say, 'I wish I would have done that.'"

Any woman over the age of 21 can join Adventurous Babes Society. Membership includes annual dues (currently $38.50 per year) and as part of your first year of membership you will receive an Adventurous Babes Society T-shirt that members are encouraged to wear while participating in adventures.

Hotaling explains: "When we are social, we are happier and healthier."
