Guide to St. Patrick’s Day and Night

Written by Loren Amelunke

We have a special edition of ICT Nightlife this month! Don’t worry, we’re not going to skip out on the regular nightlife ideas — we’re just going to add in events to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. There are family-friendly daytime events and some ideas for the night owls, of course.

Delano Paddy Day Parade

The Delano parade is one of the most popular St. Patrick’s Day events every year. It takes place on March 14 this year. The parade will start at Douglas and McLean and run west to Walnut St. The parade starts at noon, but the street party and food trucks will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Kids Zone and drink trucks will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be 14 food trucks, three booze trucks and two local tap trucks. Don’t miss D.J. Dugger performing from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl

I’m particularly excited about this one — this is the first year I’m able to participate in a bar crawl. You may just see me there. The crawl will take place on March 14 from 4 to 10 p.m. and then the after party goes until 12 a.m. Venues include The Dive, Emerson Biggins, O’Larney’s Pub, Rain Bistro & Lounge, Fever Night Life, Revolution Lounge, The Depot Pizza & Taps. Tickets range from $7 per person online to $18 per person at the event. You’ll get two to three drinks or shots included with the ticket (that’s a great deal for the price!) and have access to drink specials and food specials at select venues.

Knocknasheega band performs a late-night show at the Artichoke Sandwichbar in Wichita.

Knocknasheega (Cnoc na Síge) Band

Here’s a band that’s perfect for the occasion. Knocknasheega is a local band that ties together traditional Celtic tunes with modern folk from Ireland, Scotland and parts of the United States. In an email they explained, “We throw in selections from the Old Norse, Central and Eastern Europe, and we'll toss in some originals now and then. Some of our tunes are hundreds of years old, and we're proud to carry on the tradition of the music while adding our own personal touch here and there.”

Their music features Brooke Browning on the five-string fiddle; John Browning on guitar; Danna Hotmar on flute, whistle and vocals; Sam Jonker on vocals and spoons; Seth Girton on cello and Jason Miller on bodhrán and vocals. Make sure to catch one of their shows in March!

St. Patrick’s Day 5K

You will NOT be seeing me at this one — I don’t run. But to each their own. It seems like you may be able to walk instead of run. The event will take place on March 15. It starts at 8 a.m. at the Wichita Cowtown Museum. The top three runners in each age category will win an award, but anyone who participates will receive a finisher’s award and pint glass. Don’t forget to wear a St. Patrick’s day outfit to participate in the costume contest.

Shamrock Scramble Golf Tournament

Here’s another event you won’t catch me at — I don’t have the patience for golf. But for those who have perfected the sport, show out in the tournament at Auburn Hills Golf Course. Make sure to register on the Golf Wichita website. Day one is already sold out, but day two will be March 15 at 9 a.m. Tickets are $125 per person and include green fees, cart, balls, a tee gift, lunch, green beer and prizes

Paddy’s Patio Party at Bubbles

Here’s an event for a more laid-back St. Patrick’s Day. On March 14 starting at 10 a.m. Bubbles will offer green bubbles, green booze and cocktail specials!

St. Patrick’s Day Bash at Mort’s

There will be live music playing on the Mort’s legendary patio all day on March 17. The doors open at 1 p.m. Everything will be green — your beer, martini, shots and even wine!

Locals pack in to O'Malley's Irish Pub on a busy night.

PHOCK St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl

The event is led by PHOCK (Parrot Heads of Central Kansas). The group is a non-profit organization that sets up events to meet people and give back to the community at the same time. This year alone they’ve fundraised for Make-A-Wish, HumanKind Ministries, Salvation Army and many more. Their website also says they’re fans of Jimmy Buffet-style music, known as tropical rock. The crawl starts at 1 p.m. at O’Malley’s Irish Pub & karaoke room. Venues will include Dudley’s, Mulligan’s Pub and O’Brien’s Irish Pub.
