TALKING CABINETS, COUNTERTOPS & MORE!

From colors to finishes, this year is a turning point for kitchen design. Let’s explore!

Q: What are current trends in kitchen cabinets?

A. In cabinetry, we typically see two styles. A modified shaker is a simple shaker style with small details or insets to make it a bit more interesting. Another popular option is the slab door. This sleek style can be contemporary, industrial, mid-century modern, luxe and even farmhouse. The finish and hardware on these flat doors will define the tone and style of the space. When it comes to color, white cabinets have been popular for years. While other colors, styles and stains come and go, white painted shaker is a staple for this market and is our top seller. You can dress it up or dress it down and it is a transitional foundation for any home. This style is perfect if you are considering reselling your house because it presents such a clean, classic look and is a great investment.

Rich charcoal and onyx-stained cabinets or colorful painted cabinets in blues, greens and even black have increased in recent months. Color trends are beginning to shift from the popular deep navy blue color to the green family of deep teals, jade, sage and soft mint.

Wood tones are also starting to be a popular choice as we are seeing natural, organic elements combined with painted and metallic elements or mixed with live-edge walnut open shelving, natural knotty wood island cabinets and beautiful hickory flooring. Combining the wood-tone elements with painted cabinets or metallic tiles and hoods offers gorgeous combinations that complement and make even a small space big on style.

Q: What are today’s top countertop choices?

A. Once again, it’s all about granite countertops! Quartz that looks like white marble has recently dominated the countertop industry as the most durable and neutral product available. However, recent advances in stone sealer have companies offering an unbeatable 20-year warranty against accidental staining. So, for many clients, “sealed granite” is a top choice as well as the stronger natural stones like quartzite.

A new trending choice is the matte finished countertop available in quartz, granite, concrete and a new porcelain material. A local customer favorite is the “ebony honed” granite that provides texture and durability with the look of less durable soapstone. Also, the matte gray quartz that looks like concrete is in demand.

Q: What other trends are emerging?

A. A matching backsplash is also a new trend and creates a sleek, cleanable surface without grout lines and minimal caulking. Another popular choice is the large-format tiles that can be used in a variety of fun ways, including backsplashes, showers, fireplaces and floors. Some of these tiles are now available in sizes up to 5-by-9 feet, which is a dramatic shift from a 3-by-6 inch subway tile. If a smaller tile is used, typically it is a shaped tile such as a hex, picket or arabesque.

And mixed metallics are in! Long gone are the days of every piece of metal finish matching in a home. Today, we are looking for lighting, hardware, plumbing fixtures and appliances that use multiple finishes like matte black and champagne golds, mixed with shiny surfaces like chrome or polished nickel.

There are so many great style combinations. At Kitchen Tune-Up, we will help you make informed decisions and focus on the elements you want to incorporate, all within a budget-friendly design. Request your consultation by calling 316.558.8888.
