Q&A With Matt Fouts

Director, Tanganyika Wildlife Park

WRITTEN BY Julie Underwood Burton

Q. What’s new at Tanganyika Wildlife Park?

A. At Tanganyika Wildlife Park, we continually seek new ways to enhance our guest experiences and to strengthen our connections to the natural world through new animal experiences. We have had tremendous momentum over the past few years and 2022 is no exception. For a limited time, monthly exclusives include the “Sloth Painting” and “Feeding the Anteater” experiences. June exclusives also include behind-the-scenes tours with the new baby pygmy hippo, Link, and engaging meet-and-greets with Cheeks the prairie dog. We have a baby white tiger guests can name at our annual fundraiser, the Twilight Tour. We are also excited to announce that Tanganyika Falls is open for its second season and plans are underway for our new Safari Park expansion.

Q. What is the Twilight Tour being held on June 11?

A. On the evening of Saturday, June 11, the park closes in order to host Tanganyika’s Twilight Tour, our popular Tanganyika Wildlife Park annual fundraiser. Attendees will enjoy behind-the-scenes viewings, local appetizers, beer, wine samples and more. You won’t want to miss the chance for these once-in-a-lifetime

park experiences, custom animal art and incredible silent auction items — plus we guarantee you will have an amazing wild evening like no other at Tanganyika. Register online at  twpark.com/twilight-tour. Funds raised at Twilight Tour help ensure the provision of continued exemplary care for the animals and provide for future park expansion costs. Because the park does not receive government funding or subsidies and is closed over the winter, this event is our primary fundraiser.

Q. What is one of the most popular summer attractions?

A. Tanganyika Falls has been an excellent addition to the wildlife park where guests can cool off during the summer months. While kids play in the waterfalls, water slides, tipping buckets, etc., parents can sit back with a frozen drink or local beer and relax, knowing their kids are in a safe and fun environment. With all the enhancements made to the splash park, Tanganyika Falls meets and exceeds the CDC Model Aquatic Health Code, considered the gold standard for water facilities.

New this summer, Cabanalows, are the perfect semi-private structures for families or small groups to take a break from the heat, and are available to rent for several hours or all day. So come spend an hour or the entire day. It’s a cool place to be this summer.

Q. Tell us about Safari Park and what we can expect in the future at Tanganyika.

A. The Safari Park will be a significant addition to Tanganyika that will house our new white rhinos from Africa, which should arrive just before the Twilight Tour, along with a second herd of giraffes and other African hoofstock. Guests will be able to experience the animals on a train, a truck or possibly even a kayak.

Also planned is a new plaza area with new smaller African animal exhibits and a large, new lion exhibit for our gorgeous lions (also available for viewing at the Twilight Tour), small day-camping cabanas, a new casual dining restaurant, an event center for 500 people and a camp with multiple tents that will allow you to stay in the middle of Safari Park. Currently these projects are in design-and-development phases. Watch for some elements to open as early as 2024.
