Garden Prep for Fall Before The Leaves Turn

Written by Paige Feikert

As the late summer heat sets in and the transition to raking leaves nears, the focus on your lawn and landscaping needs should also shift gears toward the changing seasons. Whether you are planning on using the transition to fall to make major changes to your landscaping, plant trees or prepare your garden beds for the colder months, Professional Landscaping Services in Wichita can help.

The locally owned and operated landscaping company has more than 35 years experience, offering custom landscaping design and installation, patio design and construction, irrigation and drainage, tree removal and installation, garden bed maintenance, sodding, seeding, pest control and more services.

“We are dependable, we do quality work, the people who work with us have many years experience — many with more than 20 years experience,” said Peter Salmeron, president and CEO of Professional Landscaping Services. “We are honest, get work done on time and we communicate with customers frequently.”

Late summer and early fall are perfect times for preparing your landscape for the late fall and winter seasons. First, refresh your front yard with fall-blooming flowers like mums and ornamental kale, or get a head start on spring by planting bulbs like tulips, irises and daffodils before winter is in full swing. It’s also a good time of year for planting new trees or maintaining current trees. Planting in the fall allows the trees to establish roots during the winter. Pruning and trimming not only dying tree and shrub branches, but also annuals and perennial blooms in the garden is also necessary ahead of the winter season.

Preparing irrigation systems for the winter is a vital task in the fall season to avoid freezing pipes and potential damage to the system. It is also a good time of year to install new irrigation systems or new insulation to pipes associated with current irrigation systems. This preparation reduces the risk of freezing pipes over the winter, and new system installation prepares your lawn for spring well in advance.

Lawn preparation is also key during the late summer and early fall, with tasks like aeration, overseeding, fall-specific fertilization and weed control being most important. Aeration will help reduce soil compaction and enable better penetration of water and nutrients to the roots of the grass in your lawn. Overseeding will help with patchy lawns, and fertilizing with products that have lower nitrogen levels and higher potassium and phosphate levels will help promote hardiness of grass roots to survive the winter months. Pulling and treating for weeds in the fall will also help reduce the weed growth in the spring months.
